Lauca National Park is located in the Putre commune (first region); the park was created in 1970 with a surface area of 137,883 hectares and is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. In the park, it is possible to admire the volcanos that rise from the 6 meters above sea level in which the park is located; the volcanos found at this altitude are those with the names of Parinacota, Pomerape, Guallatire, and Acotango. The principal objective of Lauca National Park is to protect the wildlife and houses a third of the bird species that exist in the country – as well as different species of animals – like: vizcachas, alpacas, llamas, and vicuñas. Inside the park, we find the beautiful Lake Chungará – one of the highest lakes in the world (an altitude of 4,517 meters) – as well as the Cotocotani lagoons (various lagoons found together in a lava field).

We will visit the chullpas (pre-Colombian funeral tombs) and the colonial Church of Curahuara de Carangas – known as the “Sixteenth Chapel of the Highlands.” The Sixteenth Chapel of the Highlands is called such because of the quality of the artwork which is found in the interior of the church and whose paintings cover the walls, making the place look like a biblical scene. During the trip, we will pass through the Cotacotani Lagoon, the village of Parinacota, Bofedales de Chucullo, and also a place that offers a beautiful view of the region (called Mirador de Chucullo in Spanish); there may even be a walk through the sector found in what is called Las Cuevas.
