Tour to Tiwanaku (Pre-Inka Culture)

TIWANAKU – A PRE-INKA CULTURE
(LOCATED IN THE BOLIVIAN HIGHLANDS)

Tiwanaku – anciently known as Taypi k’ala in the Aymaran language (Central Stone in English) – is the most important archaeological site in Bolivia due to its extension and magnificence; its culture chronologically dates back to 1500 B.C. in its birth – 1200 A.D. in its expansion – with three evolutionary periods: the Aldean, the Urban, and the Expansive periods.

The ancient city is found 71 kilometers outside of the city of La Paz; its route, which passes through the Bolivian-Peruvian border immigration post of Desaguadero after Tiwanaku, is via an asphalted highway and takes about 1.5 hours. Tiwanaku is found at an altitude of about 3,845 meters above sea level.
