Santa Cruz – Fort of Samaipata

TOUR TO SAMAIPATA – SANTA CRUZ, BOLIVIA

Declared as the Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1999, Samaipata was part of the pre-Inkan civilization; its name means in Quechua “Place between the Mountains” – and the name is accurate because the place is literally surrounded by hills and mountains. Samaipata can be reached by traveling via an asphalted highway that unites Cochabamba with Santa Cruz de la Sierra; located 120 kilometers from Santa Cruz, the place is exuberantly beautiful with much vegetation and a weather climate that is enjoyable. The archaeological site called.

The Fort of Samaipata is found only 6 kilometers from Samaipata and its principal attraction is the biggest carved rock in the world; the rock is found in the loin of a hill made of sandstone. This site dates back to the 14th Century, and it is believed that the site was a cultural and religious center within the zone between the 14th and 16th Centuries.

Samaipata was apparently an important temple where the gods were called upon; this archaeological monument is composed of ceremonial enclosures and a hydraulic system that permits the metering of rain-water intensity which is necessary for agricultural chores. The Fort of Samaipata also permits the completion of astronomical functions in addition to having been a place where ceremonial rites were completed.

It is an extraordinary and mysterious place whose origins and meaning are still a subject of investigation…
